Free public art event “The Things They Carried” invites local residents to share and preserve personal histories on August 26.
QUEENS, NY, UNITED STATES, August 24, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — Local social practice artist EunWoo Nam is pleased to announce a unique, interactive community archiving workshop, “The Things They Carried.” The event will take place on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, at 4:00 PM at the Queens Public Library at Sunnyside. This free public art project is supported by the New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) and the 2026 Queens Arts Fund, and is presented in partnership with Queens Memory.
Drawing inspiration from the concept of carrying physical objects as holders of memory, this workshop aims to collect and preserve the living history of the Sunnyside, Queens, community. Residents are invited to bring a small personal object that holds a significant memory and share the story behind it in a supportive environment. These narratives will be audio-recorded (optional) to build a collective community sound archive.
“Everyday objects often contain the most profound personal histories that define who we are as a community,” said artist EunWoo Nam. “With rapid changes occurring in neighborhoods like Sunnyside, it is crucial to create a space where individual memories can be shared and permanently archived. ‘The Things They Carried’ is not just an art workshop; it is an effort to co-create a living history of Queens through the voices of its residents.”
This session is free and open to the general public. No prior experience with archiving or art is necessary. By participating, attendees will contribute their personal stories to the official Queens Memory collection, ensuring their history becomes part of the borough’s cultural heritage.
